Early that evening, as we have drinks before dinner in the Crystal Bar at the hotel, Thomas points toward the entrance. “That’s him,” he says. I look over to see the man following us; I’ve only seen him once or twice, but I’m sure he’s part of my father’s security team. He might have even been there the night we were rescued from Dmitri. I signal to him to come over, which makes him very uncomfortable, but he eventually walks over and sits at our table. “Here to watch us?” I snap at him. “No, Samantha. I was quite surprised, fucking shocked actually, to see your young boyfriend searching for eggs in the hotel lobby this morning,” he answers dryly, adding, “I was left here to watch over things.” I’m not sure how much Alan actually knows, so I decide to bluff. “Dad didn’t tell you we were coming? They have my mom; he asked me to come look for some jewel that belonged to one of the Russians. He wants to return it.” Perplexed, Alan twists in his chair. He’s debating whether to believe me or not. After a long silence, he finally admits, “I haven’t heard from Remington in days.” Bluffing again, I tell him assuredly, “I’ll have him give you a call. He’s just been busy and doesn’t want to use his cell. Now, what do you know about this jewel I need to return?”
